When Something Needs to Change

There are times in life when we find ourselves at a crossroads, feeling stuck, uncertain, or simply knowing that something needs to change.
Coaching gives us a place to slow down and take an honest look at what’s happening, without judgment and without having to have all the answers.
We can explore what’s underneath the surface, what matters most to you, and what you may already know deep down, but haven't yet had the space to hear.
Personal Coaching and Men's Support: From Adolescence through Adulthood
MY APPROACH:
I don't believe people need "fixing".
I believe each of us already carries the wisdom we need.
My role is to walk beside you, ask honest questions, pose alternative perspectives and create space for your own clarity and insight to emerge.
There was a time, not too long ago where people lived more communally. Children grew up not only with parents, but by older cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents and other members of the community who naturally offered guidance and mentorship. The responsibility of raising a child did not fall solely on the parents. There really was a village.
Today, that village is often missing. Young people often grow up without meaningful guidance or coming-of-age rituals, unsure of their place in the world or what it means to be a healthy and whole adult. Those feelings can follow us into adulthood, especially in a culture that often places achievement and aquisistiion above connection, purpose and wholeness.
Coaching allows us to sort through where we feel a bit stuck or overwhelmed, gain clarity on where we can use support and focus on practical changes you can make in your daily life. Together, we turn that clarity into meaningful action with small, intentional steps that can lead to the lasting changes you want to see in your life.

HOW I WORK :
My approach draws on Motivational Interviewing, deep listening,
honest inquiry, values clarification, mindfulness, accountability and practical action planning. I also incorporate principles of Nonviolent Communication and Restorative Justice, an approach shaped by more than two decades of working with teenagers and adults.
WHERE I COME FROM:
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and now residing in the Hudson Valley where I have spent over twenty years in public education. First as a high school English teacher, then as a principal. Throughout those years, students, teachers, parents and administrators often sought me out for guidance, perspective, or simply a trusted place to be heard. Mentoring became a natural part of who I was and how I worked.
I was lucky enough to have a dad who was a NYC firefighter and blessed to have many firefighter "uncles" who led mostly by example. They taught me less through lectures than through how they showed up - when to listen, when to act, how to hold space and how to live according to your values. Looking back, I can see how deeply those men shaped my understanding of what it means to be a man in the world.
I am also a father of three, a grandfather and someone who finds joy in writing poetry, gardening, hiking, swimming, drumming, cooking and traveling.
MEN'S WORK:
Alongside my work in education, I've spent more than thirty years, involved in men's work, facilitating men's circles, hikes, retreats and other gatherings where men can finally set down what they've been carrying, alone. These spaces invite honest conversation about relationships, fatherhood, anger, grief, fear, accountability, brotherhood and what it means to live as a good man in the world.
WHAT I VALUE:
At the center of my life and this work are a handful of values I try to live by: authenticity, kindness, integrity, service, courage and right relationship. Our words mean little if they aren't reflected in the way we live, the way we treat people and the choices we make when no one is watching. I don't pretend to have all the answers and I'm not interested in telling someone else how to live their life. I do believe in being honest, keeping my word, taking responsibility for my choices, listening deeply and having the courage to speak the truth when it needs to be spoken. These are not values I claim to have mastered. They are values I continue to practice and return to in my own life and in my own self-work.
I believe men need other men. Not to tell them how to live, but to stand beside them when things get difficult, to challenge them when needed and to remind them of who they are when they lose their way.
Much of my work is about creating that kind of space. A place where we can drop the armor, speak honestly, listen deeply and hold one another accountable with both care and courage.
I'll meet you with compassion, respect and nonjudgment, but I'm also willing to challenge you if I see that you are hiding out in areas that need attention.
SACRED WORK:
Over the last twenty years I have been honored to learn from and work closely with Indigenous people, participating in many sacred ceremonies by learning directly from Native elders and wisdom keepers. As part of this journey, I have been taught how to tend the Sacred Fire and have been entrusted to tend these fires in many beautiful and healing ceremonies.

What Others Are Saying

I find Charlie to be an incredibly gifted "listener", who asks great questions that really made me think about how I react to certain situations in my life. He offers sound and insightful options that have allowed me to readjust how I navigate my relationships and my work-world in a healthier way.
~ J. Roland
I have known Charlie for over 8 years and in that time he has become one of the most dependable people in my life. His wisdom and experience make him a valuable friend and a trusted counselor. I've already planted the seeds for him to connect with my 16 year-old son. I trust that relationship will flourish as mine has with him.
~ P. Mayer
Charlie has a real gift for helping young men navigate what it means to be a man today. He listens without judgement, gives honest guidance, and helps people find confidence and direction without pretending to have all the answers. Sometimes that means working through something that may seem difficult to achieve by yourself. Sometimes it means making a decision, finding direction, or simply having someone in your corner as you figure out what comes next. Sometimes it means having conversations that aren't easy to have by looking honestly at the choices you are making in your life, by taking responsibility for the things that are yours to own, and recognizing where you may be getting in your own way.
We'll create a 3-month strategy with a clear end goal, where each session builds on the one before it, creating slow and steady progress to make manageable changes in your life, to achieve what may have been elusive to you in the past.
